Shallow Turbo

Shallow Turbo is an advanced dive site in the Gili Islands channel, offering a shallower counterpart to nearby Deep Turbo with strong currents sweeping across a vibrant reef plateau. Despite the shallower profile, the site's exposure to the channel's tidal currents makes it demanding and exciting in equal measure. The reef is covered with dense hard coral formations—staghorn, table, and massive corals create a complex habitat where reef fish mass in extraordinary numbers. Large green turtles are reliably encountered riding the currents, while whitetip reef sharks rest in the channels between coral heads. The current brings pulses of plankton that attract feeding mantas during the right season, making Shallow Turbo a potential bonus site for manta encounters in the Gili Islands. The key to diving this site is reading the current conditions correctly, as the turbulence can shift rapidly between manageable drift and challenging surge.
