Miramare is a beginner-friendly dive site within the Miramare Marine Protected Area near Trieste in northeastern Italy, one of the oldest marine reserves in the Mediterranean established in 1986. The protected status has resulted in remarkably healthy marine ecosystems where fish populations thrive in density and size rarely seen elsewhere in the Adriatic. The rocky reef beneath the iconic Miramare Castle features Posidonia seagrass meadows, sponge-covered boulders, and algae-covered walls teeming with damselfish, wrasse, and sea bream. Protected groupers have grown to impressive sizes within the reserve, and octopuses are commonly encountered. The educational dimension adds value, with underwater markers and designated routes that help divers understand the marine ecosystem. Miramare offers a model for marine conservation in the Mediterranean, demonstrating how protection can transform an Adriatic reef into a thriving ecosystem accessible to responsible divers.
