Relitto Maona is a beginner-friendly wreck dive in the waters of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northeastern Italy, featuring the remains of a maona (a traditional flat-bottomed Adriatic barge) resting in shallow waters near Grado. The wreck has been slowly colonized by Adriatic marine organisms, with sponges, tunicates, and algae covering the wooden structure and attracting a community of fish including gobies, wrasse, and juvenile sea bream. The shallow depth and calm lagoon conditions make this an excellent introduction to wreck diving, where new divers can practice navigation skills and develop comfort around submerged structures. The historical context of the maona—a vessel type used for centuries in the Adriatic trade—adds cultural interest to the dive. Relitto Maona offers a unique blend of maritime heritage and marine ecology in the distinctive shallow-water environment of the northern Adriatic lagoon system.
