Shark Scramble is an intermediate dive site off the Izu Oceanic Park area on the Izu Peninsula, named for the frequent encounters with various shark species that make this site exciting. The underwater terrain features volcanic rock formations and a sandy slope descending to 25 meters, where the convergence of cold and warm currents creates ideal conditions for both temperate and subtropical species. Japanese horn sharks (bullhead sharks) rest on the rocky bottom, while whitetip reef sharks patrol the deeper sections seasonally. The reef supports incredible nudibranch diversity — a hallmark of Izu Peninsula diving — alongside schools of Japanese jack mackerel, sea bream, and seasonal aggregations of spider crabs that cover the seafloor in extraordinary numbers. The site's moderate depth and the thrill of shark encounters in Japanese waters make Shark Scramble a compelling dive for intermediate-level visitors to the Izu region.
