Brain Coral is an intermediate dive site off the Watamu coast in northern Kenya, named for the spectacular concentration of massive brain coral formations that dominate the reef landscape. Some of these dome-shaped colonies are centuries old and measure several meters across, creating an awe-inspiring underwater terrain. The site reaches 30 meters over a reef slope where the giant brain corals are interspersed with soft corals, table formations, and gorgonian fans. The complex surface texture of the brain corals provides microhabitat for countless small organisms — tiny gobies, shrimp, and flatworms inhabit the grooves and valleys. Larger residents include groupers sheltering beneath the domes and moray eels in the crevices between colonies. Barracuda schools patrol the deeper water, and whale sharks visit seasonally. Brain Coral stands out for its geological grandeur — these ancient formations represent some of the oldest living structures on the Kenyan reef.
