Moray Reef and Surrounds is an intermediate dive site off Kenya's northern coast near Watamu, within the Watamu Marine National Park. As the name suggests, the site is renowned for its exceptional population of moray eels — giant morays, honeycomb morays, and spotted morays peer from virtually every crevice in the reef structure. The reef extends to 30 meters over a diverse landscape of coral formations, swim-throughs, and sandy channels. The marine park's strict protection has resulted in remarkable fish abundance: large Napoleon wrasse, schools of big-eye trevally, and impressive groupers are common encounters. The coral coverage features both hard and soft species, with beautiful table coral formations in the shallower sections. Sea turtles, reef sharks, and seasonal whale sharks add megafauna excitement. Moray Reef exemplifies the benefits of Kenya's marine protection, showcasing an ecosystem in which apex predators and large reef fish thrive.
