East Reef is a welcoming shallow dive site situated off the coast of Koh Rong Samloem in Cambodia's Gulf of Thailand. Reaching a maximum depth of just 8 metres, this site is perfectly suited for beginner divers and those completing their open water certification in the warm tropical waters of Southeast Asia. The reef lies on the eastern side of the island, where it receives shelter from the prevailing southwest monsoon winds during the dry season months of November through May. Morning dives here are particularly rewarding, as the eastern exposure catches the first light filtering through the water column, illuminating the reef in a soft glow that brings out the colours of the corals. The underwater topography consists of a gradual sandy slope dotted with patches of hard and soft coral formations. Branching staghorn corals and table corals provide structure to the reef, creating microhabitats that attract a variety of small reef fish. Schools of damselfish hover above the coral heads, while cleaner wrasses set up stations along prominent coral outcrops. The sandy patches between reef sections often reveal gobies sharing burrows with alpheid shrimp, a fascinating symbiotic relationship that rewards patient observation. Nudibranch enthusiasts will find plenty to photograph here, as the relatively calm conditions and healthy coral coverage support numerous species of these colourful sea slugs. Anemones hosting resident clownfish are scattered across the reef, providing reliable photographic subjects for underwater photographers of all skill levels. Visibility at East Reef typically ranges from 5 to 15 metres depending on the season and recent weather conditions. Water temperatures remain warm year-round, averaging 28 to 30 degrees Celsius, making exposure suits largely unnecessary. The gentle current that occasionally sweeps across the reef brings nutrients that sustain the coral growth and attract feeding fish. This site serves as an excellent introduction to Cambodian diving, offering a relaxed pace and enough marine life diversity to keep divers engaged throughout their bottom time.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
