Middle Tree is an advanced dive site positioned along the western coast of Koh Rong Samloem, Cambodia, between the more exposed headlands of the island. Reaching a maximum depth of 14 metres, this site offers experienced divers a rewarding combination of interesting topography and dynamic marine encounters in the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand. The site sits between its neighbouring dive sites Last Tree and the southern reef systems, occupying a stretch of coastline where granite boulders have tumbled from the hillside above to create an underwater boulder garden. These large rock formations, some the size of small cars, rest on a sandy bottom and are draped in a colourful coat of encrusting corals, sponges, and tunicates. Swim-throughs and overhangs formed between the boulders create a three-dimensional playground that rewards exploration. Shafts of light penetrate through gaps in the rock formations, creating atmospheric lighting conditions that underwater photographers find irresistible. The nooks and crannies provide shelter for a remarkable density of marine life, from tiny shrimp species visible only to those who look closely, to sleeping nurse sharks tucked beneath the largest overhangs. The current at Middle Tree is typically moderate but can intensify with tidal changes, bringing nutrients that sustain the site's impressive soft coral growth. Dendronephthya soft corals in pinks and reds cascade from the undersides of boulders, while whip corals extend from exposed ridges. The increased water movement compared to the island's eastern side also attracts schooling fish, with snapper and fusilier aggregations commonly observed. Cuttlefish are frequently encountered here, often in pairs during the breeding season from January to March. Their hypnotic colour displays as they communicate with potential mates make for some of the most memorable encounters in Cambodian waters. Water temperature ranges from 27 to 30 degrees Celsius, and visibility averages 8 to 12 metres, occasionally reaching 15 metres during optimal conditions in the dry season.
