남애 하우스 리프

Namae House Reef (남애 하우스 리프) is a beginner-friendly shore dive located at Namae Beach in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province, on South Korea's east coast. Reaching a maximum depth of 15 metres, this accessible site offers a gentle introduction to East Sea diving with the convenience of a shore entry directly from the beach. The site is named for its proximity to local dive operations that use this reef as their house reef for training and casual diving. The shore entry involves a short surface swim from the sandy beach over a gradually deepening sandy bottom that transitions to a rocky reef habitat within 50 metres of the waterline. This easy access makes it popular for diving courses and for experienced divers looking for a quick, uncomplicated dive. The reef structure consists of volcanic and metamorphic rock formations typical of the Gangwon coast, with boulders and ledges creating multi-level habitats. The rock surfaces support healthy growths of kelp and various seaweed species, with the kelp canopy providing atmospheric overhead cover in the shallower sections. Sea anemones in muted greens and browns cluster in protected crevices, their tentacles extending to feed on passing plankton. Marine life at Namae House Reef includes the characteristic species of Korea's East Sea coast. Rockfish lurk among the boulders, their excellent camouflage making them a fun challenge to spot. Wrasses in subtle temperate colour palettes patrol the reef, while crabs and shrimp emerge from rocky hiding spots. Nudibranchs are present for those with keen eyes and patience, with several species recorded at this site. Water temperatures range from 10 degrees in late winter to 24 degrees at the peak of summer in August. A 7mm wetsuit is adequate for summer diving, while drysuits are necessary from October through June. Visibility averages 5 to 12 metres, occasionally reaching 15 metres during optimal conditions. Namae House Reef provides a reliable, accessible diving experience on the Gangwon coast, particularly valued during summer when warm conditions make East Sea diving most appealing.
