Palggakeocho (팔각어초) is an intermediate-depth artificial reef site located off Yangyang on South Korea's Gangwon Province coast, reaching 23 metres in the productive waters of the East Sea. The name translates roughly to Octagonal Fish Reef, referring to the geometric artificial reef structures deployed at this site to enhance marine habitat. South Korea has invested significantly in artificial reef programs to compensate for decades of overfishing and habitat degradation in coastal waters. Palggakeocho represents one of the more successful deployments, where concrete and steel structures have been placed on the sandy seabed to provide hard substrate for marine organisms to colonise and shelter for fish populations to recover. The artificial structures have been in place long enough to develop a mature coating of marine growth. Encrusting organisms including sponges, tunicates, and hydroids cover the concrete surfaces, while kelp has established on the upper structures where light levels are sufficient. This biological covering has transformed the geometric shapes into living reefs that now function as productive ecosystems in their own right. Fish life around the structures is notably more abundant than on the surrounding sandy seabed. Schools of rockfish aggregate in and around the structures, using them for shelter from predators and current. Larger species including groupers and sea bass have taken up residence in the gaps between structures, while flatfish and rays rest on the sandy bottom nearby. The concentration of marine life makes this an interesting dive despite the artificial nature of the substrate. Current at the site can be moderate to strong, contributing to the intermediate difficulty rating alongside the 23-metre depth. Divers should carry surface marker buoys and plan their air consumption carefully given the depth and potential for increased exertion in current. Water temperatures follow the typical Gangwon coast pattern, ranging from 8 to 22 degrees Celsius across the seasons. Visibility averages 5 to 10 metres but can reach 15 metres during favorable conditions.
