Namae Beach (남애비치) is a beginner-level shore diving site located at one of Gangwon Province's popular summer beaches on South Korea's east coast. With a maximum depth of just 5 metres, this site serves primarily as a training venue and snorkelling location, offering convenient access to the East Sea's temperate marine environment. The site's appeal lies in its absolute simplicity and accessibility. Divers enter from the sandy beach and wade into the shallows, where the sandy bottom gradually gives way to scattered rocks and boulders that support small communities of marine life. The minimal depth and typically gentle conditions make it an ideal classroom for open water certification courses during the summer months. Despite the shallow depth, the marine life at Namae Beach includes the characteristic species of Korea's East Sea coastline. Small rockfish dart between boulders, while hermit crabs trundle across the sandy patches. Seaweed and kelp growth on the rocky sections provides food and shelter for a variety of invertebrates, including sea urchins, starfish, and small crabs. During late spring and summer, schools of juvenile fish use the shallows as a nursery, creating flurries of activity that delight beginning divers. The beach setting means facilities are readily available, including changing rooms, showers, and nearby restaurants. During the Korean summer holiday season from July to August, the beach is bustling with activity, and dive training sessions share the water with swimmers and snorkellers. Weekday visits offer a more tranquil experience. Water temperature at Namae Beach reflects its East Sea location, with summer temperatures reaching 22 to 24 degrees Celsius and winter dropping to near 10 degrees. Realistically, diving here is a summer activity, with the July to September window offering the most comfortable conditions. Namae Beach fills an important niche as an easy, accessible entry point for new divers on Korea's east coast, connecting people to the underwater world in the most approachable way possible.
