Saeseom (세섬), or Bird Island, is an advanced dive site off Jeju's Seogwipo coast in South Korea, descending to 32 metres along the volcanic walls of this picturesque islet. The site is part of a cluster of small islands just offshore that collectively offer some of the best diving in Korean waters. The underwater landscape at Saeseom features classic Jeju volcanic topography, with basalt walls and boulder fields created by ancient lava flows meeting the sea. The walls descend in a series of steps, with broad ledges at various depths creating natural platforms where marine life congregates. Deep crevices and small caves punctuate the rock face, providing shelter for larger species including groupers and moray eels. The site's deeper sections are adorned with spectacular displays of Dendronephthya soft corals, their delicate branching forms creating a riot of colour against the dark volcanic rock. These soft corals reach peak vibrancy during the cooler months from February to May, when nutrient-rich waters fuel their growth. Gorgonian sea fans and black coral bushes also thrive at depth, adding to the visual spectacle. Saeseom sits at the intersection of the warm Kuroshio Current and cooler local waters, creating conditions that support an unusually diverse mix of temperate and subtropical species. Schools of striped beakfish, yellowtail, and various wrasse species patrol the walls, while nudibranchs of remarkable variety can be found on the encrusted rock surfaces. During summer months, tropical species including butterflyfish and angelfish make seasonal appearances. Current conditions at Saeseom can be challenging, with tidal flows creating strong water movement around the island's corners. Most dives are conducted as drift dives with experienced boat support. The depth and current combination restrict this site to advanced certified divers with appropriate experience. Water temperatures range from 14 degrees in winter to 25 degrees in late summer. Visibility averages 10 to 20 metres, with exceptional clarity sometimes reaching 30 metres during winter. Saeseom delivers world-class wall diving in a temperate setting.
