Munseom Wreck (문섬 난파선) is an advanced deep dive site featuring a shipwreck resting at 35 metres off the iconic Munseom island near Seogwipo, Jeju, South Korea. This wreck adds a fascinating layer to the already impressive diving offered by the Munseom area, combining the thrill of wreck exploration with Jeju's renowned marine biodiversity. The vessel lies on a sandy bottom adjacent to the volcanic walls of Munseom, its hull providing artificial reef habitat that has attracted a thriving community of marine organisms. Over the years, the wreck's metal surfaces have been colonised by a dense coat of soft corals, sponges, hydroids, and tunicates, transforming the structure into a living reef that blends seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment. Penetration of the wreck's accessible compartments reveals a treasure trove of marine life. Large conger eels occupy the darker recesses, while schools of rockfish shelter within the hull structure. Octopuses frequently make their homes in the wreck's nooks, their dens identifiable by accumulations of shell debris. The combination of artificial structure and nearby volcanic wall creates an unusually productive dive site with diverse habitats within a small area. The 35-metre depth demands careful dive planning, with bottom time limited by no-decompression limits on recreational dives. Many visiting divers hold deep diving specialties or technical certifications, and some operators offer trimix diving for extended bottom time. The cold water at depth, often dropping below 15 degrees even in summer, adds to the physiological demands. Surface conditions at Munseom can be challenging, with the exposed southern position subject to swells and wind. Dive operators carefully monitor weather windows and typically restrict operations to calm days. The boat ride from Seogwipo harbour takes approximately 15 minutes. Munseom Wreck is a highlight of Korean diving, offering a unique combination of wreck exploration and temperate reef diving in one of Jeju's most spectacular underwater settings.
