Gala Pita Gala, meaning Rock Upon Rock in Sinhala, is a beginner-friendly dive site near Unawatuna on Sri Lanka's southern coast. True to its descriptive name, this site features a distinctive stacked boulder formation where rocks have settled upon each other to create layered overhangs and sheltered spaces that harbour an abundance of marine life. The formation's stacked structure creates multiple levels of habitat within a compact area. The spaces between boulders form natural grottos and swim-throughs large enough for divers to explore comfortably, while the overhangs provide shade that encourages growth of organisms preferring reduced light conditions. The result is a site with more structural complexity than its modest size might suggest. Coral growth on the exposed surfaces includes healthy colonies of hard corals, with branching Acropora and table corals on the sunlit upper rocks and brain corals and massive species on the more stable lower sections. The shaded interiors of the boulder stacks support soft corals, sponges, and tunicates in vivid colours that contrast with the grey rock. The concentrated habitat means marine life density is high relative to the formation's footprint. Groupers, moray eels, and lobsters shelter in the deeper recesses, while damselfish and wrasses animate the water around the outer surfaces. Schools of cardinalfish gather in the shadowed gaps between rocks, their large eyes adapted to the low-light conditions. Nudibranchs reward careful searching of the encrusted rock surfaces. The beginner-friendly conditions reflect the site's shallow depth and sheltered position near the coast. Current is typically gentle, and the sandy surroundings provide clear navigation references. The close proximity to Unawatuna's tourist infrastructure means the site is well served by local dive operations. Best conditions occur from November to April, with visibility of 8 to 15 metres and warm water temperatures around 28 degrees. Gala Pita Gala offers a charming, life-rich dive experience in one of Sri Lanka's most popular coastal areas.
