Goda Gala is an intermediate dive site off Sri Lanka's southern coast near Hikkaduwa, reaching 23 metres at a substantial rocky formation that ranks among the area's more impressive underwater structures. The name, meaning Large Rock in Sinhala, is shared by several dive sites along the coast, but this particular formation near Hikkaduwa offers a distinctive combination of depth, structure, and marine life. The rock formation is substantial, with walls, overhangs, and channels creating a complex three-dimensional environment. The formation rises from a sandy bottom, with its upper sections in shallower water and its base extending to the 23-metre maximum depth. This vertical range creates distinct habitat zones that support different communities, making the dive interesting at every depth. Coral coverage is moderate to good, with hard corals establishing on the rock's upper surfaces where light is strongest. Table corals of impressive size spread across horizontal surfaces, while brain corals and Porites formations anchor the reef community. The deeper sections support soft corals, gorgonians, and impressive barrel sponges that benefit from the increased current at depth. Marine life at this Goda Gala is diverse, with the formation's size and depth supporting species not commonly seen at shallower sites. Large groupers occupy the deeper overhangs, their bulk impressive at close range. Schools of snappers and sweetlips aggregate around the formation, and moray eels are common throughout. Sea turtles visit regularly, and reef sharks are occasionally spotted in the deeper zones during early morning dives. The intermediate rating reflects the 23-metre depth and the moderate current that develops around the formation. Navigation is straightforward using the gala as a central reference point. Best conditions occur from November to April during the northeast monsoon, with visibility of 8 to 18 metres and water temperatures around 27 to 29 degrees. This Goda Gala is one of Hikkaduwa's more rewarding deeper dives.
