The Earl of Shaftesbury is an advanced wreck dive off Sri Lanka's southern coast, featuring the remains of a British cargo vessel that met its end in these Indian Ocean waters. This historically significant wreck is one of the more impressive wreck diving experiences available in the Galle and Unawatuna area, attracting experienced divers interested in maritime history and artificial reef ecology. The wreck lies on the seabed with its structure still partially intact, providing a recognisable ship form despite decades of deterioration and marine growth. The vessel's cargo holds, engine room, and bridge area offer penetration opportunities for trained wreck divers, with natural light filtering through openings to illuminate interior spaces. The ship's massive propeller and rudder assembly at the stern provide one of the dive's most photogenic features. The wreck has developed into a thriving artificial reef ecosystem. Hard coral colonies have established on the upper surfaces, while the hull's interior darkness supports communities of organisms adapted to low-light conditions. Sponges in vivid colours encrust metalwork throughout the structure, and soft corals cascade from overhead features within the wreck. The marine life density around the Earl of Shaftesbury is impressive. Large groupers occupy the engine room and bridge areas, while schools of glassy sweepers fill the cargo holds in dense silver clouds. Lionfish station themselves at entry points throughout the wreck, their ornate fins displayed as they wait for passing prey. Barracuda circle the wreck's perimeter, attracted by the concentration of smaller fish. The advanced rating reflects the depth, overhead environment, and potential for current at this offshore location. Visibility can vary significantly, from 5 metres during poor conditions to 20 metres when currents bring clear oceanic water. The Earl of Shaftesbury is best dived during the northeast monsoon from November to April, when sea conditions are calmest and visibility most reliable. This wreck is a highlight of Sri Lankan diving.
