Black Coral Point is an advanced dive site off Sri Lanka's southern coast near Hikkaduwa, named for the impressive colonies of black coral that thrive in the deeper sections of this current-swept rocky point. Black coral, despite its name, displays a range of colours from deep green to amber when alive, and the specimens at this site are among the most impressive in Sri Lankan waters. The underwater topography features a rocky promontory extending into the Indian Ocean, where tidal currents accelerate around the point to create conditions that favour filter-feeding organisms. The black coral colonies have established in the moderate to deep zones where current is strongest, their bush-like forms extending branches into the flow to capture passing plankton. The rocky substrate supports a graduated reef community, with hard corals dominating the shallower sections and soft corals, sponges, and the signature black coral colonies becoming more prominent with depth. Gorgonian sea fans spread their flat planes across current-facing surfaces, and barrel sponges anchor themselves to prominent rock features. The current that sustains the black coral also brings pelagic visitors. Schools of trevally and barracuda patrol the point's edge, while reef sharks have been spotted by fortunate divers during early morning dives. The resident population includes large groupers, moray eels, and an impressive variety of reef fish that benefit from the nutrient-rich water flowing past the point. The advanced rating reflects the strong currents, significant depth to reach the best black coral specimens, and the exposed position that can create challenging surface conditions. Only experienced divers comfortable with drift diving techniques should attempt this site, and timing the dive around tidal patterns is essential. Visibility at Black Coral Point can be excellent when oceanic water sweeps in, reaching 20 metres or more. The northeast monsoon season from November to April offers the most reliable conditions for accessing this remarkable site.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
