Silva Point is a beginner-friendly dive site on Sri Lanka's southwestern coast near Galle, offering a relaxed shore-accessible dive over rocky reef habitat. Named after a local family connected to the area's diving heritage, this site provides gentle conditions that make it suitable for training dives and casual explorations. The site features a rocky shoreline that extends underwater as a series of low reef formations and boulder fields, creating a varied terrain at comfortable depth. The easy shore entry and gradual depth profile make it particularly suitable for open water certification dives, where the combination of interesting marine life and manageable conditions keeps students engaged between skill exercises. Coral coverage on the rocky substrate includes a mix of hard and soft coral species typical of the southern Sri Lankan coast. The corals are developing steadily on the stable rock surfaces, with branching corals in the well-lit shallows and more robust massive species on the deeper formations. Sponges and tunicates add colour to the vertical rock faces. The marine life at Silva Point, while not as dramatic as the deeper offshore sites, provides plenty of interest for observant divers. Small groupers, wrasses, and damselfish make up the resident fish community, while moray eels occupy crevices in the rock formations. Nudibranchs and flatworms reward careful searching on the encrusted surfaces, and the occasional sea turtle passes through during feeding forays. The sandy patches between rock formations harbour burrowing organisms, gobies, and sometimes small rays. Night diving at Silva Point reveals a different community, with octopuses emerging to hunt and crabs of various species leaving their daytime hiding spots. Water temperatures remain warm at 27 to 29 degrees year-round, with the best conditions from November to April during the northeast monsoon. Visibility averages 8 to 12 metres. Silva Point is a reliable, accessible site that serves the Galle area diving community well.
