Lagoon Reef is a beginner-friendly dive site near Hikkaduwa on Sri Lanka's southwestern coast, where a sheltered reef within the natural lagoon formation provides calm, protected conditions ideal for new divers and snorkellers. This accessible site serves as one of the primary introductory diving venues along Sri Lanka's popular southern coastline. The reef sits within the semi-enclosed lagoon that Hikkaduwa is famous for, protected from ocean swells by a natural barrier of rocks and reef that breaks incoming waves. This shelter creates conditions more reminiscent of a swimming pool than the open ocean, with minimal current and gentle surge that allows beginners to focus on developing their skills without the added stress of challenging conditions. The coral reef within the lagoon has experienced periods of both degradation and recovery, with conservation efforts by local dive operators contributing to ongoing regeneration. Hard coral colonies are re-establishing on the rocky substrate, with branching Acropora and massive Porites species leading the recovery. The coral growth supports a growing community of reef fish that has responded positively to protection measures. Marine life at Lagoon Reef includes colourful reef fish typical of the Indian Ocean's tropical waters. Butterflyfish, angelfish, and damselfish patrol the coral formations, while schools of sergeant majors gather in the shallows. Sea turtles are a highlight, with green turtles regularly entering the lagoon to feed on seagrass and algae. The turtles' familiarity with human presence means they often allow close approach, creating memorable encounters for beginning divers. The lagoon's shallow, warm waters and gentle conditions also make it an excellent snorkelling destination, with much of the reef visible from the surface. Glass-bottom boat tours operate alongside diving activities, giving non-divers access to the underwater scenery. Water temperatures remain warm at 27 to 29 degrees year-round, and the lagoon's sheltered conditions mean diving is possible in most weather. Lagoon Reef is the perfect starting point for discovering Sri Lanka's underwater world.
