SS Rangoon is an advanced wreck dive off Sri Lanka's southern coast near Galle, where a British P&O passenger steamship rests at 32 metres. Sunk in 1863 after striking a reef, this is one of the oldest accessible wrecks in Sri Lankan waters, with over 160 years of submersion adding archaeological interest to what is already an impressive wreck diving experience. The Rangoon lies on the seabed with significant structural remains still identifiable despite the extensive deterioration that comes with over a century and a half of submersion. The vessel's engine, boilers, and lower hull sections remain the most substantial features, while the upper decks have long since collapsed or corroded away. The wreck's spread of debris creates a large diving area with interesting features scattered across the sandy bottom. Over 160 years of marine colonisation have transformed the Rangoon into a mature artificial reef ecosystem. Massive coral colonies have established on stable wreck components, some of the colonies themselves potentially decades old. The wreck's metal surfaces support dense communities of sponges, soft corals, and encrusting organisms that have completely obscured the original construction materials in many areas. The marine life around the Rangoon is exceptionally diverse, with the wreck functioning as a major habitat concentration point. Large groupers have established territories within the wreck structure, while schools of sweetlips, snappers, and batfish gather in the shelter of the remaining hull. Barracuda circle the perimeter, and lionfish station themselves at vantage points throughout the wreckage. The 32-metre depth demands careful gas management and limits bottom time on recreational dives. Current can be present at the wreck site, adding to the dive's demands. Proper wreck diving training and experience are essential. Best conditions occur from November to April, with visibility of 8 to 20 metres. The SS Rangoon is a must-dive for anyone interested in maritime history and advanced wreck diving.
