Lee's Apartment is an advanced dive site off Sri Lanka's southeastern coast near Tangalle, where a complex rock formation at 18 metres provides an intricate, compartmentalised underwater environment reminiscent of a multi-room apartment. The site's clever name reflects the labyrinthine nature of the formation, with interconnected chambers and passages creating an exploration-rich dive. The rock structure at Lee's Apartment features multiple overhangs, cavern-like spaces, and swim-throughs that create distinct rooms connected by passages of varying width. Each chamber has its own character, with different lighting conditions and marine communities. The most atmospheric spaces feature natural light filtering through cracks above, creating dramatic illumination effects. The advanced rating reflects the overhead environment within the formation, requiring good buoyancy control and awareness of exit routes. Some passages are narrow enough that fin kick technique matters to avoid silting the sandy floor. Experienced divers will appreciate the sense of exploration and discovery as they navigate through the formation's many spaces. Marine life within the apartment is abundant, with different species inhabiting different rooms based on their habitat preferences. Large moray eels occupy the deeper, darker recesses, while schools of glassy sweepers fill the intermediate chambers. Groupers claim positions at the major junctions, and lobsters retreat into the narrowest crevices. The formation's exterior surfaces support healthy coral growth. The surrounding reef provides additional diving interest before and after exploring the main formation. Coral coverage is developing well, with both hard and soft corals contributing to the area's increasing biodiversity. Best conditions occur from November to April during the northeast monsoon, with visibility of 8 to 15 metres and water temperatures around 27 to 29 degrees. Lee's Apartment offers a creative and engaging dive experience for experienced divers on Sri Lanka's less-explored southeastern coast.
