Cathedral Cave is an intermediate dive site on Gozo's north coast in Malta, where a stunning cave system features a large interior chamber with an air pocket and natural light effects that create the atmosphere of an underwater cathedral. This is one of the most photographed dive sites in the Maltese archipelago. The cave is accessed through an underwater entrance at moderate depth along the limestone coast. Divers swim through a short tunnel before the space opens dramatically into the main chamber, a large room with a ceiling that breaks the surface, creating an air pocket where divers can surface and remove their regulators while admiring the cave's interior. The cathedral effect is created by natural light entering through underwater windows and cracks in the rock above, projecting shifting patterns of blue and gold across the chamber walls. The play of light on the water surface within the air pocket creates a shimmering, ethereal illumination that fully justifies the site's name. On sunny days, the effect is genuinely magical. The cave walls display Gozo's geological history in cross-section, with visible rock layers and erosion features telling the story of millions of years of formation. Marine organisms including colourful sponges, tunicates, and small corals decorate the lower walls, transitioning to barnacles and algae in the splash zone above. Outside the cave, the surrounding reef offers additional diving interest, with typical Mediterranean marine life including groupers, wrasses, bream, and octopuses inhabiting the rocky terrain. The combination of cave experience and reef diving makes for a complete and varied dive. The intermediate rating reflects the overhead environment and the need for basic overhead awareness, though the spacious nature of the main chamber makes it less demanding than true cavern diving. Visibility in Malta's waters frequently exceeds 30 metres. Cathedral Cave is a must-dive for anyone visiting Gozo.
