Billinghurst Cave is one of Gozo's most thrilling overhead environment dives, a spacious cavern system located on the northern coast near Reqqa Point that offers advanced divers the chance to explore a genuine cave penetration in waters renowned for their exceptional clarity. With a maximum depth of around twenty-four meters and a main chamber large enough to accommodate multiple divers simultaneously, this site delivers the excitement of cave diving within parameters that are accessible to experienced recreational divers with appropriate training. The dive begins with a shore entry or boat drop near the northern cliffs, followed by a descent along the sloping reef to the cave entrance at approximately eighteen meters. The mouth of the cave is wide and inviting, framed by limestone walls covered in golden cup corals that seem to welcome divers into the interior. Even from outside, the scale of the passage is impressive — the entrance is large enough that natural light penetrates well inside, reducing the claustrophobic feel that smaller cave systems can produce. Entering Billinghurst Cave is a moment of genuine wonder. The main chamber extends roughly thirty meters into the cliff face, with a ceiling that rises and falls to create distinct zones within the cave. The walls are covered in an extraordinary density of marine growth that thrives in the low-light conditions — dense clusters of sponges, cup corals, and colonial tunicates create living murals that glow warmly when illuminated by dive torches. The contrast between the amber-lit cave interior and the deep blue of the entrance behind creates a visual drama that ranks among the most beautiful sights in Mediterranean diving. The cave harbors marine life that is rarely seen in open water. Large lobsters occupy the deeper recesses, their antennae waving from the shadows, while schools of cardinal fish fill the water column in dense, shimmering clouds that part before advancing divers. Shrimp populate every crack and ledge, their eyes reflecting torchlight like tiny rubies. The cave floor features sandy patches where flatworms and nudibranchs navigate in unhurried fashion, adding touches of vivid color to the amber-toned interior. A particular highlight is the air pocket at the back of the cave, where the ceiling rises above the waterline and divers can surface in an enclosed chamber. The sensation of breathing natural air inside a sea cave, with the sound of wavelets echoing off the rock and the knowledge that the open sea lies thirty meters of rock and water away, is both exhilarating and humbling. Billinghurst Cave demands respect — proper torch equipment, good buoyancy control, and a calm temperament are essential — but for advanced divers who meet these requirements, it offers one of the most memorable and atmospheric dives anywhere in the Maltese islands.
