Reqqa is an advanced dive site on Gozo's north coast in Malta, featuring a dramatic underwater reef system with deep walls and complex geological formations. The site is renowned among experienced divers for its combination of depth, scenery, and potential for encounters with larger Mediterranean species. The underwater landscape at Reqqa features a reef extending from the coast, with walls dropping into deep water on the outer edge. The reef crest provides a staging area before the wall descent, with coral-like growths of sponges and false coral decorating the upper surfaces. The wall itself is sheer in places, with deep fissures and cavern-like overhangs providing exploration opportunities. The geological interest at Reqqa is significant, with the limestone formations displaying clear evidence of the tectonic forces that shaped the Maltese archipelago. Fault lines visible in the rock face create dramatic visual features, and the erosion patterns along different rock layers produce varied surface textures that support distinct marine communities. Marine life at Reqqa benefits from the deep wall's proximity to the open Mediterranean. Large groupers are regularly sighted, their bulk impressive in the clear water. Barracuda schools cruise the wall edge, and amberjack make periodic appearances. The wall's crevices harbour moray eels, lobsters, and various species of shrimp. The exposed position occasionally produces encounters with pelagic species including tuna. The advanced rating reflects the significant depth, the north coast's exposure to swell and current, and the distance from shore. Only experienced divers should attempt this site, and weather conditions must be carefully assessed. Malta's visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres, making Reqqa's dramatic wall and reef features visible in full detail. Water temperatures range from 15 to 26 degrees. Reqqa is one of Gozo's finest advanced dive sites.
