The P-31, also known as the former AFM P31 patrol boat, is one of Malta's premier wreck dives, deliberately scuttled in the waters near Comino to create an artificial reef and diving attraction that has quickly become one of the most popular sites in the Maltese archipelago. Resting at a maximum depth of around twenty meters with the shallowest points considerably less, this former Maltese Armed Forces vessel offers advanced divers a compact but thrilling wreck penetration experience in the crystal-clear waters of the Comino channel. The descent to the P-31 is a moment of building anticipation as the wreck's outline emerges from the blue below. The patrol boat sits upright on a sandy seabed, her hull intact and her superstructure clearly defined against the pale sand. The exceptional visibility around Comino — regularly exceeding thirty meters — means the entire wreck is often visible from the moment you begin your descent, creating a dramatic first impression that sets the tone for the dive. Approaching the vessel, the scale becomes apparent: at roughly fifty meters in length, the P-31 is large enough to explore thoroughly but compact enough to circumnavigate multiple times in a single dive. The exterior of the wreck has been colonized by marine life with remarkable speed since her scuttling. The hull and superstructure are covered in a growing layer of algae, sponges, and encrusting organisms that soften the vessel's military lines and give her an increasingly organic appearance. Schools of damselfish hover above the deck in dense clouds, while larger species — groupers, sea bass, and occasional barracuda — patrol the perimeter. The wreck has become a true artificial reef, concentrating marine life in an area that was previously a featureless sandy plain. For divers with appropriate training, the P-31's interior is accessible through several prepared openings. The bridge and main deck compartments can be explored with natural light penetrating through hatches and windows, revealing passageways and equipment that retain the vessel's character as a working patrol boat. The swim-through from bow to stern provides a complete interior tour, with enough space for comfortable passage but enough structure to create the authentic feel of wreck penetration. Ambient light is available through much of the interior, though a torch reveals additional details and the marine life sheltering inside. The P-31 wreck dive is typically combined with exploration of the surrounding Comino reefs, making for a varied and satisfying dive. The wreck's moderate depth means generous bottom time is available, allowing divers to explore thoroughly and photograph the growing marine ecosystem. For wreck diving enthusiasts visiting Malta, the P-31 is an essential experience — a thoughtfully prepared artificial reef that combines historical interest, marine ecology, and diving adventure in one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful underwater settings.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
