Kurali Beru is an advanced dive site in Mulaku Atoll, where the atoll's outer reef creates a wall dive of impressive depth and marine richness. The Dhivehi word beru refers to the outer reef, and this site delivers the full outer reef experience — a sheer wall dropping into the deep Indian Ocean, adorned with spectacular marine growth and patrolled by the pelagic species that make oceanic reef diving among the most exciting forms of underwater exploration. The dive begins at the reef top, where healthy coral growth creates a vivid garden that gives way to the wall's edge with dramatic suddenness. Looking down the wall, the reef face drops vertically into deep blue water that seems to extend infinitely below. This sense of exposure — floating above an abyss with the living reef stretching away in both directions — creates a powerful emotional response that never diminishes, regardless of how many wall dives you have completed. The wall's face supports distinct biological communities at different depths. The upper sections, bathed in tropical light, feature dense hard coral growth and the colorful fish communities of the shallow reef. As depth increases, soft corals become dominant — gorgonian fans in vivid reds and oranges extend from the wall to intercept the passing current, while branching soft corals create forests on the ledges. The deeper sections harbor species adapted to reduced light — black coral colonies, large sponges, and the shy deep-water species that retreat from the reach of most recreational divers. The pelagic encounters along the wall are a major draw. Grey reef sharks cruise the wall edge in groups, their silhouettes providing dramatic contrast against the deep blue background. Eagle rays sweep along the wall face with effortless grace, and large schools of pelagics — trevally, barracuda, and occasionally tuna — pass through the blue void beyond the reef with powerful purpose. The wall acts as a natural guide rail for these species, concentrating their movements and providing extended observation opportunities. Kurali Beru delivers outer reef wall diving of exceptional quality in the remote waters of Mulaku Atoll, where lighter tourism pressure has preserved the marine ecosystem in a condition that rewards the effort of reaching these distant Maldivian waters.
