Mantas and More is an advanced dive site in Mulaku Atoll that delivers exactly what its evocative name promises — manta ray encounters complemented by a rich supporting cast of marine species that make this one of the most exciting dives in the central Maldives. The site is located at a known manta cleaning station, where the great rays visit to have parasites removed by small cleaner fish, creating prolonged observation opportunities that few other types of marine encounters can match. The dive descends to a reef formation where specific coral heads serve as the cleaning station — nature's equivalent of a spa where manta rays queue patiently for the attention of tiny cleaner wrasse. The experience of watching a manta ray with a wingspan exceeding four meters hover motionless above a small coral head, allowing fish the size of your finger to pick parasites from its gills and skin, is one of diving's most humbling and beautiful sights. The mantas' intelligence and gentleness are palpable, and their enormous eyes seem to acknowledge the watching divers with calm awareness. The 'more' in the site's name refers to the broader marine community that makes the dive rewarding even between manta appearances. The reef surrounding the cleaning station is in excellent health, with hard and soft corals creating a varied landscape that supports diverse marine life. Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper edges, eagle rays cruise past the reef, and schools of fusiliers and bannerfish create colorful formations above the coral. Groupers, Napoleon wrasse, and sea turtles are all possible encounters during the dive. The key to enjoying manta encounters is patience and proper positioning. Settling on the reef at a respectful distance from the cleaning station and maintaining stillness allows the mantas to continue their natural behavior undisturbed. The rays may make multiple passes, hovering over the cleaning station for minutes at a time before circling away and returning. During peak season, multiple mantas may be present simultaneously, creating scenes of underwater ballet that rank among the most magical in all of diving. Mantas and More lives up to its billing — a dive site in remote Mulaku Atoll where the chance to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural environment is complemented by a healthy reef ecosystem that ensures every moment underwater is filled with wonder.
