Cave Bay is an advanced dive site in the Hauraki Gulf near Mahurangi, reaching 20 meters around a bay featuring underwater cave formations that add an element of exploration to the diving experience. The caves cut into the volcanic rock coastline, creating enclosed spaces where light and marine life interact in dramatic fashion. The cave formations vary from shallow overhangs to deeper penetrations into the rock, creating a range of overhead environments that demand different levels of confidence and experience. The volcanic rock surfaces within the caves are colonized by organisms adapted to reduced light, including sponges and colonial organisms whose vivid pigments glow dramatically when illuminated by dive lights. The reef surrounding the caves supports the typical Hauraki Gulf marine community, with snapper, blue maomao, and various reef species providing the open-water encounters that complement the cave exploration. Crayfish favor the dark recesses of the cave formations, and their long antennae often signal their presence before the diver's light reveals their full form. Cave Bay offers advanced Hauraki Gulf divers the added dimension of cave exploration in a productive temperate marine environment.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
