Shipwreck Bay is an advanced dive site in the Hauraki Gulf near Mahurangi, reaching 18 meters in a bay that takes its name from the maritime casualties that have occurred in these waters over the centuries. The site may feature actual wreck remains along with the natural reef habitat of this productive section of the gulf. The bay combines natural rocky reef with whatever structural wreck remains exist on the seabed, creating a diverse underwater environment where historical maritime artifacts coexist with the living marine community. The volcanic rock substrate supports kelp forests and encrusting communities, while any wreck structures add the artificial reef effect that concentrates marine life around hard substrate. The advanced rating reflects the conditions that made this bay treacherous for historical shipping: current exposure, submerged rocks, and the navigational challenges that can also affect divers. These same conditions create the productive marine environment that rewards experienced divers with encounters reflecting the Hauraki Gulf's biological richness. Marine life at Shipwreck Bay includes the standard Hauraki Gulf species assemblage enhanced by whatever structural complexity the wreck elements provide. Snapper, crayfish, and various reef species inhabit both the natural reef and any man-made structures. Shipwreck Bay offers advanced divers a blend of maritime history and natural marine ecology in the productive waters of the Hauraki Gulf.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
