South Sunk

South Sunk is an intermediate dive site in the Hauraki Gulf near Mahurangi, reaching 30 meters around a submerged reef formation that rises from deeper water. The name describes the formation's position, a southern reef that sits below the surface, creating the concentrated habitat that attracts marine life from the surrounding area. The sunken reef provides substantial hard substrate in an otherwise less structured seabed, concentrating marine organisms in ways that create impressive biodiversity within a compact area. The volcanic rock supports diverse encrusting communities, and the reef's vertical profile creates multiple habitat zones from the current-exposed summit to the sheltered base. The 30-meter depth provides access to deeper temperate communities that include species rarely seen at shallower sites. The cooler, darker conditions at the reef's base favor certain organisms, and the vertical zonation visible on the reef face provides a cross-section of the Hauraki Gulf's depth-stratified ecology.
