Carlton Hotel is a beginner dive site in the Caniço area of southern Madeira — a dive site associated with the Carlton Hotel's oceanfront position within the Garajau Natural Reserve, providing guests and visiting divers with shore access to the remarkable protected reef ecosystem that has made this section of Madeira's southern coast one of the finest marine reserve diving destinations in Europe. The Garajau Natural Reserve's protection since 1986 has produced a marine environment where fish densities, individual sizes, and animal behavior toward divers are all dramatically different from unprotected areas — the result of decades of effective enforcement that has allowed the reef community to recover from historical fishing pressure to something approaching its natural baseline. The volcanic lava formations immediately offshore from this section of the Garajau coast create the complex topography of caves, crevices, and irregular surfaces that concentrates the protected fish community in immediately impressive densities. Large Atlantic grouper — some of impressive size given the lack of fishing pressure — hover near the reef with the confidence of animals that have never experienced predation from humans. Schools of bream and salema porgy move slowly through the lava formations. Mediterranean moray eels occupy the deeper crevices. The Madeiran chromis, an endemic damselfish found only in the Macaronesian archipelago, forms characteristic hovering formations above the reef surface. The beginner-accessible depth and calm, south-facing conditions typical of this protected section of coast make Carlton Hotel an excellent site for certification training, introductory diving, and relaxed leisure dives. The proximity to accommodation makes multiple dives per day effortlessly achievable.
