Farol is an advanced dive site in Madeira — a site named for the Portuguese word for lighthouse, likely referring to a coastal lighthouse structure near the dive entry point or a submarine feature of the volcanic reef system that characterizes the most dramatic diving around this North Atlantic island. Advanced dive sites in Madeira are typically characterized by greater depth, stronger Atlantic surge and current exposure, and more complex underwater topography than the sheltered beginner sites of the protected southern coast — conditions that attract the larger pelagic species and more demanding experiences that serious divers seek. The volcanic geology of Madeira creates dramatic underwater landscapes at advanced sites: vertical lava walls that drop from the surface into the blue Atlantic, submarine tunnels and caverns carved by centuries of wave action, and the boulder and arch formations that make Madeiran diving visually distinctive. Large grouper and amber jacks cruise the deeper sections of the exposed reef. Schools of Atlantic barracuda hover in the current shadow of prominent formations. The encounter potential at advanced Madeiran sites includes visits from larger Atlantic species: blue sharks cruise through on oceanic patrols; Amberjacks hunt in formation through schooling fish; and the occasional manta ray passes along the island's more exposed coastline. Moray eels and various ray species inhabit the deeper reef sections. The surge and current management required at exposed Madeiran sites justifies the advanced rating, and proper local guide support is strongly recommended for first-time visits. Dive operators based in Funchal and the Caniço area run regular trips to advanced coastal sites when weather conditions permit, and the dramatic Atlantic scenery above the waterline complements the impressive diving below.
