Praia da Ribeira Quente takes its name from the warm spring that once flowed into the sea at this village on São Miguel's southern coast — ribeira quente means warm stream in Portuguese, and the thermal heritage of this area, which sits in the shadow of the Furnas caldera, is woven into the landscape above and below the waterline. The dive site off this geothermally influenced coastline is rated intermediate, and the combination of interesting volcanic topography, good marine life, and the warm, slightly unusual local water chemistry creates a diving experience with a distinctly São Miguel character. The village of Ribeira Quente sits at the base of dramatic cliffs where the volcanic interior of the island meets the Atlantic, and the geology visible in the cliff faces continues seamlessly into the underwater environment. The basalt substrate extends from the base of the cliffs outward along the seafloor, with boulder fields and low-profile volcanic ridges creating the complex terrain that reef fish exploit for shelter and hunting. The water quality here has historically been slightly influenced by the freshwater seeps that give the area its name, though the submarine thermal expression is subtle compared to the dramatic fumaroles of Furnas. The intermediate-level dive unfolds along the reef structure at comfortable depths, with the most productive sections lying in the 12 to 22 metre range where the reef has sufficient complexity to support a diverse community. Ornate wrasse — the perpetually active, vividly coloured constant of São Miguel's reef diving — are present in numbers. Larger wrasse species make occasional appearances from the deeper substrate. Bream and sea bass occupy the spaces between rock formations, their silver flanks catching the filtered southern light that illuminates this sheltered coast particularly well. The geothermal influence on the underwater environment, while not as dramatic as at Lagoa das Furnas, adds an interesting dimension. Mild temperature anomalies in the water column are occasionally perceptible, and the seafloor in certain areas shows the yellow and orange mineralisation that indicates hydrothermal chemical activity. These features are scientifically interesting and add geological depth to what is already a rewarding reef dive in one of the Azores' most atmospherically distinctive coastal communities. Ribeira Quente is accessible by road from Furnas and offers divers the opportunity to combine an underwater visit with one of São Miguel's most famous thermal experiences on land — the hot springs and calderas of Furnas are a short drive inland. A day that combines morning diving at Praia da Ribeira Quente with an afternoon at the Furnas thermal pools captures both dimensions of São Miguel's volcanic heritage.
