Named for its association with the seabird colonies that colonise the rocky northern coast of Grand Turk, the Rookery is a wall dive of real character — part coral garden, part dramatic drop-off, part pelagic highway. The site sits toward the northern end of the western reef system, benefiting from the productive currents that sweep through the Columbus Passage and deliver nutrients, visibility, and wildlife in abundance. The reef flat here is a genuine garden in the classical sense: varied, colourful, and densely populated. Healthy coral coverage includes fields of sea fans oriented to catch the prevailing current, clusters of pillar coral rising in impressive columns, and the wide flat plates of lettuce coral covering areas of the reef terrace. Juvenile reef fish are conspicuous here — the Rookery's protected shallows function as a nursery for many species, so you'll encounter small French and queen angelfish, juvenile parrotfish in their striped phase, and tiny neon-bright dottybacks darting in and out of coral branches. Where the reef table ends, the wall begins with characteristic Grand Turk drama. The descent reveals a face generously decorated with sponge formations in orange, red, and purple. Enormous barrel sponges stand like sentinels at intervals down the wall, and rope sponges trail vertically in curtains that capture the available light in vivid colour. Green sea turtles are reliably present here, often resting on ledges or grazing on sponges at mid-depth, generally tolerant of divers who approach quietly. The Rookery's northern exposure occasionally produces surge and current, keeping it firmly in intermediate territory — divers should be comfortable managing themselves on an open wall with variable conditions. When the current is running, the site rewards those who let it carry them along the wall, which functions as a drift dive of exceptional quality. Visibility is typically superb, frequently exceeding thirty metres, making the open blue particularly inviting and encounters with eagle rays and reef sharks all the more spectacular.
