Chumphon Pinnacle is one of Koh Tao's premier dive sites, a massive underwater pinnacle rising from the Gulf of Thailand seabed to thirty meters depth northwest of the island. This intermediate-rated site delivers some of the most impressive fish aggregations in the Gulf, with enormous schools of chevron barracuda, giant trevally, and batfish creating spectacles that rival the best dive sites in Southeast Asia. The pinnacle is actually a group of large granite formations connected by ridges of rocky reef, covering an extensive area of seabed. The main pinnacle rises from the deep sand to within about fourteen meters of the surface, with satellite pinnacles and boulders extending the diveable area significantly. This scale means the site cannot be fully explored in a single dive, and repeat visits consistently reveal new features and encounters. The fish life at Chumphon Pinnacle is legendary. Chevron barracuda in schools numbering in the hundreds form tight spiraling columns around the pinnacle, their silver bodies creating one of the Gulf's most iconic underwater scenes. Giant trevally hunt the reef edges in powerful packs, while enormous schools of batfish hover in the water column with characteristic calm. Whale sharks visit during plankton-rich periods, making Chumphon one of the most reliable sites in the Gulf for these gentle giants. Coral growth on the pinnacles is healthy, with large pink anemones being a signature feature of the site. Hard corals form the reef framework, and soft corals and barrel sponges add dimension at depth. The overall biological productivity of the site reflects the nutrient enrichment from the currents that flow past the exposed formation. The intermediate rating reflects the thirty-meter depth, the current that frequently flows across the pinnacle, and the open-water location. The current is actually part of the experience, as it drives the fish activity that makes the site so spectacular. When conditions are right, Chumphon Pinnacle delivers diving of a quality that demonstrates why Koh Tao deserves its reputation as a world-class diving destination.
