Japanese Gardens is an intermediate dive site off the northwestern coast of Koh Tao near Koh Nang Yuan, one of the island's most famous and beloved dive sites named for the meticulous, garden-like quality of its coral formations. With a maximum depth of twenty meters and a reef that blends granite boulders with immaculate coral gardens, this site exemplifies the best of Koh Tao's underwater beauty. The site lies between Koh Tao and the tiny three-island chain of Koh Nang Yuan, and the underwater landscape reflects the dramatic above-water scenery of this iconic location. Granite boulders of various sizes create a structured foundation, while the spaces between and atop the boulders host coral gardens of extraordinary quality and diversity. The name perfectly captures the manicured appearance of the reef, where corals of different species create organized, layered displays of color and form. Coral health at Japanese Gardens is exceptional. Hard corals in stunning variety create the reef structure, with staghorn thickets, table corals, and massive heads arranged in natural compositions that look almost deliberately planted. Soft corals and anemones add color to the shaded areas, and the overall effect is of an underwater garden tended by nature with artistic precision. Fish life is abundant and diverse. Schools of fusiliers create mid-water spectacle, while reef species provide constant color among the coral formations. Triggerfish patrol with characteristic attitude, turtles visit regularly to feed on the sponges, and the macro life on the coral surfaces provides endless material for photographers. Anemones with clownfish families are scattered throughout the gardens. Japanese Gardens captures the essence of Koh Tao diving at its most beautiful. The combination of dramatic granite scenery, immaculate coral gardens, diverse marine life, and the stunning backdrop of Koh Nang Yuan creates a dive that consistently ranks among the island's absolute favorites.
