White Rock is an intermediate dive site off the western coast of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand, widely regarded as one of the island's premier diving destinations. This collection of massive granite boulders rising from a sandy seabed to twenty-eight meters creates a spectacular underwater landscape that hosts some of the most diverse and abundant marine life in the Samui archipelago, earning it a reputation as Koh Tao's signature dive. The site takes its name from the lighter-colored granite formations that distinguish it from nearby sites, and these substantial rock formations create a complex three-dimensional environment of walls, overhangs, swim-throughs, and crevices that provide habitat for an extraordinary range of marine organisms. The boulders are scattered across a wide area, meaning a single dive can only explore a portion of the site, and repeat visits consistently reveal new features and encounters. Coral growth on and between the granite boulders is extensive and diverse. Hard corals including massive Porites heads that may be centuries old form the reef foundation, while branching corals, table corals, and encrusting species fill the gaps. Soft corals and sea fans extend from the rock surfaces, particularly in areas with good current exposure. The combination of hard substrate from the granite and biological substrate from the coral creates layer upon layer of habitat complexity. Fish life at White Rock is exceptional by Gulf of Thailand standards. Schooling fish are a major feature, with vast clouds of fusiliers, snappers, and barracuda orbiting the rock formations. Batfish gather in groups, their flat bodies turning in unison as they track divers with curiosity. Groupers of impressive size inhabit the deeper overhangs, while reef sharks are encountered with increasing regularity as Koh Tao's marine protection efforts bear fruit. Turtles visit the reef to feed on sponges, and their gentle presence adds a magical quality to the dive. The macro life at White Rock is equally impressive. Multiple nudibranch species crawl across the coral surfaces, and dedicated macro hunters can spend entire dives examining a single boulder's worth of invertebrate life. Cleaner shrimp maintain busy stations where fish line up for parasite removal, and the smaller crevices harbor tiny crabs, blennies, and gobies that are invisible to all but the most patient observers. Current at White Rock ranges from gentle to moderate, providing enough flow to keep the water clear and bring nutrients without creating difficult diving conditions for intermediate divers. The twenty-eight meter maximum depth allows exploration of the deeper boulder formations where larger marine life tends to congregate, while the shallower sections offer excellent conditions for safety stops and extended bottom time. White Rock embodies everything that makes Koh Tao a world-renowned dive destination. The combination of dramatic granite scenery, healthy coral reefs, prolific fish life, and warm clear water creates a diving experience that is as close to perfect as the Gulf of Thailand gets.
