Shark Island is an intermediate dive site off the southeastern tip of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand, a small rocky island whose above-water profile supposedly resembles a shark's fin. With depths reaching twenty-four meters and the most dramatic coral gardens on the island, Shark Island delivers some of Koh Tao's most visually stunning and current-exposed diving. The island sits in an exposed position where currents from the open Gulf sweep around its base, creating conditions that are more challenging than the sheltered bays but rewarding for their marine productivity. The underwater terrain features rocky reef slopes covered in some of the healthiest and most diverse coral growth on Koh Tao, with hard corals in exceptional variety and density creating a living carpet that extends from the shallows to the sandy bottom. The coral gardens at Shark Island are legendary in the Koh Tao diving community. The diversity of hard coral species is remarkable, with brain corals, table corals, staghorn thickets, and massive boulder corals creating a reef of genuine complexity. Soft corals and large anemones add color to the deeper sections, and the overall reef health reflects the nutrient enrichment from the current exposure and the relative lack of anchor damage at this rocky island. Fish life is excellent, with the current drawing schools of trevally, barracuda, and fusiliers to the island's edges. Reef fish populate the coral gardens in exceptional density, and turtles are regularly encountered feeding on the reef. The macro life is rich, and the healthy coral means the supporting cast of invertebrates that underpins the food web is diverse and abundant. Shark Island is where Koh Tao's best coral meets its most dynamic conditions. The intermediate rating reflects the current and depth, but the reward is diving among coral gardens that showcase the Gulf of Thailand's reef potential at its very best.
