The cove itself provides a degree of natural shelter from open swell that makes entry and exit more manageable than at more exposed Laguna Beach sites, and the gradual sand-to-rock transition immediately offshore is ideal for divers building their open-water experience. The rocky reef begins within a short swim from shore and extends outward to depths of 25 to 45 feet, offering ample bottom time for beginners without the depth management pressures of deeper sites. The marine life at Fisherman's Cove reflects the productive Southern California rocky reef ecosystem in concentrated form. Garibaldi are immediate and constant companions — the brilliant orange fish that serves as California's state marine fish is abundant at this site, the territorial males defending chosen rock features with energetic displays.
