Shaw's Cove is one of the most beloved and productive shore dive sites in Laguna Beach — a small, protected cove in the northern section of this exceptional Orange County diving community that consistently delivers outstanding marine life encounters within just minutes of the entry point. The cove's protected geometry provides natural shelter from open Pacific swell, making conditions more forgiving than at exposed sites and giving the site its reputation as an excellent option for beginners and underwater photographers seeking calm, controllable conditions. Entry is via a sandy beach at the cove floor, with rocky reef beginning immediately offshore in just 5 to 10 feet of water and extending outward to the maximum depth of approximately 17 meters (about 55 feet) at the outer reef edges. The marine life at Shaw's Cove is exceptionally rich relative to its size. Garibaldi are immediately and abundantly present — territorial males defend prominent rocks throughout the cove with characteristic orange-finned aggression, providing immediate photographic subjects. California moray eels occupy virtually every suitable crevice in the rocky reef, their thick-bodied Pacific forms distinctive. Spiny lobster shelter under ledges throughout, particularly well concentrated in the areas within Laguna Beach's marine protected zones. Nudibranchs are among the most eagerly sought subjects at Shaw's Cove: Spanish shawl nudibranchs with their brilliant orange gills and purple bodies, Hopkins' rose nudibranchs, and various dorids provide spectacular macro subjects on the encrusted rock surfaces. Sheephead, kelp bass, and various rockfish round out the fish community. Bat rays glide over the sandy patches between reef sections, and on particularly fortunate days, leopard sharks rest on the sandy floor in the shallows. Shaw's Cove is a site that rewards repeated visits — conditions and species encounters vary enough to make each dive feel fresh, and the cove's small scale repays careful, slow exploration.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
