Garden Eel Cove, also known as Manta Ray Bay or the Manta Dive site, is unquestionably one of the most famous dive sites in Hawaii — a site near the Sheraton Kona Resort on the Big Island's Kona Coast where one of the world's most reliable and breathtaking wildlife encounters occurs: the nightly arrival of Pacific manta rays drawn by the lights of the resort to feed on the plankton those lights attract. This encounter has been operating consistently for decades and draws divers and snorkelers from around the world who make the journey to Kona specifically for the manta experience. By day, Garden Eel Cove is a pleasant sandy-bottom dive at moderate depth — the garden eels that give the site its daytime name sway in dense formations above their burrows in the fine sand, creating one of the Pacific's most striking and characterful reef community displays. The eels vanish instantly into their burrows at the approach of a diver, creating a wave of disappearance that spreads across the sandy slope in a fascinating behavioral cascade. Hawaiian green sea turtles rest on sandy ledges and rocky outcroppings throughout the cove during daytime dives. By night, the experience transforms entirely. As the sun sets, manta rays begin to arrive from open water, drawn by the glow of lights deployed by dive operations and the resort. These enormous, graceful animals — wingspan ranging from 6 to over 12 feet — perform barrel rolls through the concentrated plankton soup just feet above kneeling or prone divers, their cephalic fins furled and unfurled in feeding movements that reveal their evolutionary elegance. A single dive can feature five, ten, or even twenty individual mantas in simultaneous feeding activity directly overhead. The site is rated beginner because the shallow depth and calm conditions make it safe and accessible — but the experience itself is one that reduces seasoned divers to awed silence.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
