Outside Crystal Cove is a compelling intermediate dive site on the western coast of Hawaii's Big Island — a reef and lava formation environment located in the Mauna Lani area near Puako that offers diverse underwater topography and the characteristically rich marine life of the Kohala Coast at depths reaching approximately 27 meters (about 90 feet). The Big Island's Kohala coastline is among Hawaii's most productive and varied diving environments, shaped by the relatively young lava flows of Mauna Kea and characterized by the sharp, complex geological forms that create the intricate habitat diversity supporting exceptional marine biodiversity. At Outside Crystal Cove, the reef extends from the shallows of the inner cove to an open-water outer reef section where the lava topography drops in a series of steps and shelves, providing distinct depth zones for different species assemblages. Hawaiian green sea turtles are a constant presence throughout the dive — the Kohala Coast supports impressive turtle populations, and this site consistently delivers multiple turtle encounters per dive, particularly on the shallower sections where the animals feed and rest. Spotted eagle rays are regular visitors to the deeper outer sections of the reef, gliding through the water column with the lateral grace typical of the species. Whitetip reef sharks rest on sandy patches between lava formations, occasionally encountered in pairs or small groups. The deeper sections of the site support the Hawaiian black coral that begins to appear at depths below 20 meters, its branching forms hosting small crustaceans and providing habitat complexity. The intermediate rating reflects both the depth range available and the current patterns that periodically develop along this exposed section of the Kohala Coast. Access is by boat from operators running from Kawaihae Harbor or from Mauna Lani's boat landing area.
