Paniau North is a dramatic volcanic lava reef dive site on the western (Kohala) coast of Hawaii's Big Island, located within the Mauna Lani Resort area near the historic ahupua'a of Paniau — a landscape that combines ancient Hawaiian cultural significance with some of the most spectacular underwater terrain on the island. The Big Island's western coast is defined by the flows of Mauna Kea, Hualalai, and Mauna Loa volcanoes, and the underwater topography reflects that geological youth: sharp lava formations, dramatic drop-offs, and complex cave and arch systems that have yet to be worn smooth by the same processes that have shaped older reef systems elsewhere in Hawaii. The site descends to a maximum depth of approximately 24 meters (about 79 feet), with the most dramatic terrain occurring in the mid-range depths where the lava formations create vertical walls, overhangs, and swim-throughs that harbor a concentrated and impressive community of Hawaiian marine life. The advanced rating reflects both the depth and the need for strong current management on some dives in this area of the island. Hawaiian green sea turtles are a near-certainty at Paniau North — this stretch of the Kohala coast is extraordinarily productive for turtle encounters, and the animals are often resting in large numbers on the lava shelves and swimming slowly through the surge channels. Spotted eagle rays cruise the deeper portions of the reef with unhurried elegance, and whitetip reef sharks are regularly encountered resting on sandy patches between lava formations. Octopus are common in the lava caves and crevices throughout the site. Large schools of Hawaiian sergeant majors and pyramid butterflyfish fill the water column above the reef. Access is by boat or shore entry through the Mauna Lani Resort, with several Kohala-coast dive operators running regular trips to this and adjacent sites.
