Olowalu Beach is one of Maui's most beloved and historically significant snorkeling and shore dive sites — a shallow, protected stretch of coast between Lahaina and Ma'alaea where a remarkable reef system grows just offshore in clear, calm water that is accessible to beginners and ideal for extended exploration at gentle depths. The name Olowalu carries deep significance in Hawaiian history — this coastline was the site of a devastating conflict in the late 18th century — and the reef itself has been a place of ecological significance for far longer. Today, Olowalu is recognized as one of Maui's healthiest and most diverse coral reef systems, with particularly impressive coral cover and species diversity compared to more heavily visited and impacted sites elsewhere on the island. Depths at Olowalu are shallow by diving standards — maximum approximately 12 meters (40 feet) — but the reef begins in just 3 to 5 feet of water and extends outward in beautiful, gradually deepening formations that can occupy a diver for an hour of careful, slow exploration. The coral growth at Olowalu is exceptional: large lobe coral formations, intricate finger coral complexes, and stands of cauliflower coral create a dense, three-dimensional reef structure. Hawaiian green sea turtles are a defining feature of the site and are present in impressive numbers throughout the reef — resting on sandy ledges between coral heads, feeding on algae, and swimming slowly through the coral corridors in a way that feels more intimate than at some of Maui's more visited turtle sites. Spotted eagle rays glide through the deeper sections of the reef with elegant wing-like sweeps. Octopus are frequently encountered tucked into coral crevices, their color-changing camouflage impressive even at close range. The calm, protected character of this section of the Ma'alaea Bay coastline keeps conditions suitable for beginners on most days, though northeast trade wind afternoons can bring chop to the surface.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
