Airport Beach in Kahului on Maui's West Side is a reliably productive and intermediate-level dive site situated just south of the Ka'anapali resort corridor, offering a more rugged and less crowded alternative to the popular resort beach sites immediately to the north. The site lies along a stretch of coastline where the lava reef drops from the shallows to a maximum depth of approximately 24 meters (about 80 feet) — providing a range of depth zones that allow exploration across different reef communities within a single dive. The shallow sections feature typical West Maui nearshore reef: coral-encrusted lava formations colonized by Hawaiian reef fish and the reliable green sea turtles that define Maui diving. Moving deeper, the reef transitions through increasing coral complexity with large star coral formations, wire coral, and gorgonians becoming more prominent as depth increases. Hawaiian green sea turtles are a near-certainty throughout the dive profile — this stretch of West Maui coast consistently hosts some of the island's highest turtle densities, and encounters at Airport Beach are reliably multiple per dive. The intermediate rating reflects both the depth range available and the surge and current patterns that develop in this relatively exposed section of the Ka'anapali coastline, which can make entry and exit timing important and occasionally challenging. The site's name references its proximity to Kahului Airport, whose approaching aircraft create a visual contrast to the underwater tranquility below — the roar of a landing jet occasionally reaching even submerged divers in the shallows. Entry is from the shoreline over lava rock, requiring reef shoes and careful footing. The reduced visitor pressure compared to Ka'anapali's main beaches gives Airport Beach a quieter character that appeals to divers seeking the West Maui reef experience without the accompanying beach-resort atmosphere.
