Cliff House is a charming and accessible beginner dive site on Maui's West Side — a coral reef area named for the coastal cliffs that define this section of the shoreline between Ka'anapali and Kapalua, where the dramatic above-water topography continues below the surface in a series of lava formations, overhangs, and colorful reef communities at pleasant, manageable depths. The site descends to a maximum depth of approximately 12 meters (40 feet), with excellent diving throughout the depth range and particularly rich marine life in the 5-to-10-meter zone where light penetration is optimal and coral growth most vigorous. The reef structure features the classic West Maui lava formation character: angular, dark basalt colonized over decades by a diverse community of hard and soft corals, encrusting sponges, and a cascade of Hawaiian reef fish species. Hawaiian green sea turtles are the signature encounter at Cliff House and are reliably present throughout the dive — resting on ledges, feeding on algae on the reef surface, and swimming slowly past divers with the unhurried confidence of animals long accustomed to respectful human presence. The overhangs and cliff-like formations that give the site its name provide interesting swim-through opportunities and shade for soldierfish clusters and resting moray eels. Butterflyfish are particularly abundant at Cliff House — fourspot, raccoon, threadfin, and milletseed butterflyfish represent the characteristic West Maui species mix, often seen in territorial pairs patrolling sections of the reef. Hawaiian sergeant majors defend nesting sites on flat rock surfaces with remarkable aggression relative to their small size, rushing at approaching divers with comic boldness. Access is by boat from Lahaina Harbor with West Maui dive operators who include Cliff House in their regular dive rotation.
