Black Rock is one of Maui's most exhilarating and visually dramatic dive and snorkel sites — a prominent lava promontory at the north end of Ka'anapali Beach near Lahaina where the island's volcanic geology meets the warm, clear waters of the Au'au Channel in a series of vertical walls, archways, and swim-throughs that create exceptional underwater topography. The site takes its name from the imposing black lava headland that forms the point — the same rock from which cliff divers leap in traditional Hawaiian ceremony each evening, a cultural landmark as well as a diving destination. Below the surface, the lava walls drop to a maximum depth of approximately 12 meters (40 feet) and are thoroughly colonized by the coral and invertebrate life of West Maui's protected waters. The site is rated advanced despite its moderate depth due to the surge patterns that regularly develop around the point and the precision required to navigate the lava formations without damaging the reef. Hawaiian green sea turtles are among the most reliably encountered species at Black Rock, and the site's reputation as one of West Maui's best turtle dive sites is well deserved — the animals rest on ledges, graze on algae, and drift through the swim-throughs with a familiarity that suggests they have claimed this rock as permanently theirs. Spinner dolphins occasionally pass through the Au'au Channel visible from the surface, and their energy permeates the dive even on dives where they don't enter the water beside you. The lava formations host Hawaiian cleaner wrasse stations, moray eels in the crevices, and colorful Hawaiian reef fish — Moorish idols, racoon butterflyfish, and abundant parrotfish. The site is accessible from Ka'anapali Beach with a short shore entry, and also visited by boat operators from Lahaina Harbor. Early morning dives before the beach crowds arrive offer the most peaceful conditions.
