Le Duc is a St. John dive site of intermediate character, believed to be a sunken vessel that has become colonised over the years into a de facto artificial reef — the name, French for the duke, suggests either a French-flagged vessel or a name given by the diving community to an unmarked wreck. Whatever the precise origins of the name, the site delivers an experience that combines the structural interest of wreck diving with the biological richness of an established artificial reef in the exceptionally clear waters of the Virgin Islands. The wreck or wreck-like structure at Le Duc lies at a depth that challenges intermediate divers to manage their bottom time thoughtfully while providing enough of a depth margin from the recreational limit that the dive does not feel pressure-constrained. The structure itself — whether a complete vessel, partial remains, or accumulated debris — provides the three-dimensional complexity that reef fish exploit enthusiastically, and the colonisation that has accumulated over years has softened the original structure's edges and surfaces into something more organic than industrial. Fish life at Le Duc is the site's primary attraction. The structure concentrates the species that prefer structural complexity: large grouper in the deeper compartments and recesses, schools of snapper orbiting the main structure in loose formations, and the moray eels that occupy every suitable cavity in the encrusted surface. The open water above the site is inhabited by the schooling species that use the structure as a gathering point — horse-eye jacks in circling formations, schools of blue runners passing through on feeding sweeps. For intermediate divers who have learned basic reef diving in the Virgin Islands and are ready for their first wreck or wreck-adjacent dive, Le Duc offers a manageable step up in complexity. The navigation demands of a wreck site — understanding the three-dimensional layout of the structure and maintaining awareness of position relative to the ascent point — are different from open reef navigation, and the skills learned at accessible wrecks like Le Duc are directly transferable to the more complex and demanding wreck dives that populate a diver's subsequent wish lists.
