Mama Hanh Beach is a warm and inviting beginner dive site in the Hon Mun area of Nha Trang Bay — a coral reef environment in the island group's sheltered waters that has developed a reputation among Nha Trang's dive community as one of the bay's most reliably pleasant and productive sites for divers building their first experiences in tropical reef diving. The site's name, with its affectionate maternal connotation, speaks to the welcoming character of the diving here: calm conditions, diverse marine life, and the comfortable warmth of Nha Trang Bay's water combine to create an environment that is genuinely nurturing for beginner divers. The reef at Mama Hanh Beach features the characteristic coral community of the inner Hon Mun zone, with diverse coral coverage spanning table corals, branching Acropora, massive Porites formations, and the encrusting and soft corals that fill the structural spaces between larger formations. The fish diversity rewards patient, attentive observation: juvenile fish shelter in the coral branches in a constantly changing parade of small, colorful, and sometimes spectacularly patterned individuals — juvenile emperor angelfish in their distinctive blue-and-white concentric circle pattern, juvenile rock beauty angelfish in their yellow-and-black adult coloration preview, and various other species passing through the reef in their transitional forms. Lionfish hover with elegant menace near overhangs, their ornate pectoral fans spread in display. Moray eels of multiple species occupy the crevices. The reliable warmth of the water — Nha Trang Bay maintains temperatures in the 26-to-29-degree Celsius range through most of the year — and the protective character of the bay make Mama Hanh Beach an excellent site for certification training and introductory dives.
