Advanced Bommie is a beginner-friendly dive site on the Great Barrier Reef near Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Despite its slightly misleading name, this coral bommie is accessible to divers of all levels and offers a wonderful representative experience of the reef ecosystem that has made the GBR a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site consists of a large coral bommie formation - a column of reef rising from the sandy seabed to just below the surface. The bommie creates a circular diving route that allows divers to explore its perimeter at various depths, from shallow coral gardens near the top to the deeper sand interface at the base. This vertical range means the bommie supports layered communities of organisms, each adapted to their particular depth and light conditions. The coral diversity on the bommie is excellent, with a mix of hard and soft coral species creating complex three-dimensional habitat. Branching corals provide shelter for small fish, massive corals form the structural backbone, and colorful soft corals add movement and visual appeal. The health of the reef at this site reflects the ongoing resilience of these outer reef structures. Marine life circles the bommie in constant activity. Schools of chromis and anthias hover above the coral in shimmering clouds, picking plankton from the water column. Larger residents include anemonefish of various species, hawksbill turtles that visit to feed, and reef sharks that patrol the deeper perimeter. The base of the bommie is worth investigating for resting wobbegong sharks and blue-spotted lagoon rays. Conditions are typically calm and welcoming. The outer reef location provides excellent visibility, frequently exceeding 20 meters. Water temperatures are warm year-round at 24 to 29 degrees, and currents are usually gentle around the bommie structure. Advanced Bommie is a quintessential Great Barrier Reef dive - accessible, diverse, and alive with the colors and movement that make this natural wonder one of the most extraordinary places to scuba dive on the planet.
